This is an excellent comparison of one real and one fictional character. Both men are tall and thin, and both attract enemies because of their sometimes unpopular decisions. Like Lincoln, Atticus Finch is known for his sometimes painful honesty. Atticus always believes in telling it like it is, especially to his children, who he hopes will benefit from his words of wisdom. Like Lincoln, Atticus is a leader in his community; he has been elected repeatedly to the Alabama state legislature without opposition. What better way could the citizens of Maycomb honor a man? Like Lincoln, Atticus believes that all men are created equal--specifically, the black man--and he takes the Tom Robinson case knowing that his stance could bring harm to him and/or his family. Like Lincoln, who gave his life for honoringhis beliefs, Atticus puts himself at risk to others whose racial enlightenment and strength of character are not as solid.
