If glucose is not needed by the body for immediate energy, it is stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen.  Glycogen is easily broken back down to supply energy to the body.  However, the liver and muscles can only store a limited amount of glycogen, and when glycogen stores are full the liver converts the excess into fat that is stored around the body as adipose tissue.
